Grafton Results

On Saturday 1st December members of the QSRA made the four hour trip to Grafton Speedway for yet another night of racing where approximately eleven (11) Mighty Midgets who had nominated for the night had turned up for what I believe was a good nights racing with action a plenty in all of the three heats, and the twenty (20) lap feature race  which saw Brock Dean coming to grief on the third turn after clipping the wall, which left a lot of repairs to be done in time for the next race meeting in approximately three weeks time at Charlton Raceway in Toowoomba.

The night started off with the official drivers briefing followed by engine starts where all the cars had a chance to check for any problems and then getting them ready for the nights racing with a flying start and it was good to see that all the heat races were run without any major problems from start to finish.

Event 7. Heat 1

Mighty Midgets was the first chance to see the cars in full flight on a track that would was a lot different than some of the other tracks that they have race on so far during the 2007 - 2008 season where there are no straights and some quick time would have been recorded by the top runners if the announcer had of had his stop watch working as I don’t think that any times for the midgets have ever been recorded at Grafton during our last couple of visits and it would be interesting to see what a midget time would be at this track.

Event 13. Heat 2.

Was another good display of racing was witnessed by the crowd as the action was on up front for the entire event with positions on the line and some real close racing by Brock Dean and Jeremy Hassell as by the middle of the race the leaders had rounded up the back markers and gave a brilliant display of how to drive through the traffic with the following results:

1st.  99 Brock Dean

2nd.  2 Jeremy Hassell

3rd.  3 Barrie Watt

4th.  21 Bill Foreman

5th.  76 Neil Tobin

6th.  22 Dennis Russo

Event 19. Heat 3.

Was yet another good event with plenty of hard racing by all the drivers who had come to grips with the track and it was also good to see that the QSRA Club President Michael (Show Pony) Harders was able to show us just how good he is behind the wheel of a midget Speedcar with strong finishes in every heat that he contested on the night, here are the results of heat 3 as follows:

1st.  2 Jeremy Hassell

2nd.  39 Shane Heathcote

3rd.  14 Michael Harders

4th.  15 Grant Draney

5th.  12 John Davidson

6th.  76 Neil Tobin

7th. Dennis Russo

8th.  47 John McLaughlin.

Event 25. Midget Feature race which was run over twenty laps saw all the cars and drivers seeded as per the Club Championship points system which means that if your are leading the point score you will be starting at the back of the field and as the starting positions were placed on the board the cars and drivers prepared for the final event of the night and as the cars were lead around the track by the pace car it was going to be on for young and old with the field well and truly mixed throughout the it was not going to be a forgone conclusion on who would take the race out when normally the top drivers are at the front of the field, so for this meeting they would have to show everybody just how good they are, and as the green flag and lights came on it was on for young and old with the top drivers having to fight to get to the front of the field and it was on lap five that the first red light had to be shown as Qld 99 Brock Dean had touch the safety fence in turn three which would see Brock out of the race for the night with some extensive repairs ahead for the team, but, Brock walked away unhurt which is always good to see, after he had dominated the racing throughout the night by winning both his heats, and as the green light came back on to restart the feature it was on again with some good driving displays by all the drivers with the following results:

1st. 15 Grant Draney

2nd. 2 Jeremy Hassell

3rd. 14 Michael Harders

4th. 3 Barrie Watt

5th. 76 Neil Tobin

6th.  22 Dennis Russo

Lismore

Saturday 3rd November

2007 the Mighty Midgets of the QSRA made the trip to Lismore Speedway under the direction of Speedway Promoter David Lander and it was a tough night for the midgets as there was some repair jobs to be done within the next seven days so that we will hopefully have a good line up for there next meeting planned for BIS and we will find out more during the week.

Michael (Show Pony) Harders new paint job on Qld 14 Zupps Fontana/Stealth midget in the pits at Lismore Speedway before the start of the nights racing, and I believe that Michael and the Crew which also includes the whole family have been working hard since the last midgets meeting at Maryborough to get this car ready for the meeting at Lismore, and I am sure that Michael and the crew got some good reports on the night.

The Mighty Midgets made their first appearance for the night with the engine start with all cars that had nominated for the meeting plus a couple of extras such as Qld 99 Brock Dean who had arrived after an long drive after the first round of the Speedcar Super Series had to be cancelled due to bad weather in Sydney, as well as Qld 22 Dennis Russo who had also turned up just as the drivers briefing was being conducted in the pits.

Browndog’s Patience Pays Off

New South Welshman Mark Brown timed his run to perfection to win the 2007 Queensland Speedcar Championship at Charlton Raceway on Saturday March 31.  The championship had the hottest field for many years with visitors Brown, Mark Cooper, Jason Gates and Matt Young from New South Wales and the West Australian flyer, Dene McAllan.  The occasion also marked the debut of former go karter and junior sedan driver, 17 year old Shane Heathcote behind the wheel of a Brad Hilder built Razor chassis with a DOHC Volvo engine prepared by Neville Brennan.  The crowd was healthy after a good promotional campaign including a display at Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre with drivers Jeremy Hassell, Dene McAllan and Michael Harders and a couple of cars in attendance.  Unfortunately the conditions were uncomfortable during the night with low temperature and blustery winds making the conditions difficult for everyone.

The first heat saw Ken Stanaway blast to a win with Matt Young and Jeremy Hassell after an altercation on the first corner saw John Lennon out with a broken front axle.

Heat 1

1.Ken Stanaway

2.Matt Young (NSW)

3.Jeremy Hassell

Mark Brown showed his intentions early when he won from position three in the second heat.

Heat 2

1.Mark Brown (NSW)

2.Jason Gates (NSW)

3.Grant Draney

Craig Smith (Position 2) pulled in before the start of heat three with a missing engine which moved Kelvin Hamilton up onto the front row beside Dene McAllan.  Hamilton beat the West Australian youngster to the jump and held him out to the end.  John Davidson, who has done very little racing in the last twelve months, enjoyed a good dice with Jason Gray and managed to grab the last major position.

Heat 3

1.Kelvin Hamilton

2.Dene McAllan (WA)

3.John Davidson

Heat four saw Mark George control the race from position one while Barrie Watt did well to hold out Matt Young and Jeremy Hassell for most of the race but lost two spots at once near the end.   John Lennon spun twice and discovered that a shock had also been damaged in the earlier incident.

Heat 4

1.Mark George

2.Matt Young (NSW)

3.Jeremy Hassell

In the next heat Mark Cooper (NSW) (Position 2) shot to the lead on the green with Mark Brown (NSW) giving chase after passing a couple of cars.  Then the unexpected happened when Brown got caught out by the difficult conditions and spun.  Restarting from the rear he worked his way back to fourth at the end.

Heat 5

1.Mark Cooper (NSW)

2.Grant Draney

3.Jason Gates (NSW)

Alf Stanaway was a non starter in the final heat after the last round was dropped due to the conditions.  This brought Hamilton up to pole and he did not waste the opportunity winning his second heat which made him top point scorer from the heats.  Dene McAllan also fell foul of the conditions spinning in the last lap and scoring no points which put him out of the pole shuffle.  Davidson and Gray had another good dice while Heathcote was keeping it straight and steady.

Heat 6

1.Kelvin Hamilton

2.John Davidson

3.Jason Gray

The first couple of rounds of the pole shuffle went to the inside starting cars with Gates beating Stanaway, Draney defeating Gates, who then lost to Brown who broke the pattern.  Brown accounted for Mark George but was then knocked out by Mark Cooper.  The former Kiwi then defeated Matt Young.  Hamilton looked to have the final in hand until Cooper used the inside line to win on the line.

The 30 lap feature only made it to the back straight when a coming together saw Barrie Valentino in the Jeff Barton owned Harris/Ford go high in the air coming down hard on the back of the car.  He was temporarily knocked out but came around and was okay apart from a sore leg.  Valentino and Jason Gray were out and Grant Draney joined them on the infield when a broken brake line was discovered after a first corner coming together.

The race again went green with Hamilton taking the lead from Cooper and Brown.  Further back Dene McAlln (Position 16) was going forward and passing cars but needing a mid race yellow to put him in touch with the leaders.  Cooper soon relegated Hamilton to second who was then under siege from Brown.  In the meantime Gates had moved to fourth and McAllan was well inside the top ten.

Brown went to second and closed in on Cooper but unable to find a gap on a track which had gone away.  Gates picked up Hamilton in the last five laps as Brown increased the pressure on Cooper.  Brown tried an unsuccessful outside move coming around turns three and four with one to go so tried again in the final corner only this time making it stick winning by inches.  Brown had previously won the title in 2004.

Race Report By Barry Lane.

Hassell and ‘The Hawk’ Strike at Grafton

Jeremy Hassell in the Brisbane Haulage Stealth/Hawk enjoyed a great return to form with three wins at Grafton Speedway on 10 March including the 20 lap feature race.  The meeting was a good opportunity for drivers to get used to the track prior to the ‘East Coast Midget Stampede’ to be held over Easter.  Grafton Good Friday April 6 and Lismore Easter Saturday April 7.

Hassell started from the third row in the feature and quickly moved through traffic and into the lead.  He was chased all of the way by Kelvin Hamilton who attempted a last lap pass without success.

There was one yellow when Ken Stanaway spun in the tight first turn with an ill handling car after suffering damage in an earlier heat.  After adjusting his shocks from the cockpit during the stoppage he was more competitive until his engine dropped onto three cylinders with a couple of laps remaining and he was fortunate to hold onto his place.  Brock Dean was again a non finisher after breaking another pump drive.

The Heat were combined A & B grade car with the A grade starting at the front with Kelvin Hamilton (Hy-Performance Racing Stealth/Mopar) continued on his winning way with victory in the first heat with Hassell also showing a liking for the ‘D’ shaped track.  Brock Dean was a non finisher after breaking a pump drive.

The second heat ended in unusual circumstances.  Ken Stanaway (position 1) looked smooth and fast out front of the field until the final corner when a lapped car slowed suddenly.  The Polar Ice Stealth/Esslinger hit the fence then went up on its side back across the track just as Kelvin Hamilton arrived on the scene.  Fortunately quick action by the Mopar driver avoided contact as Stanaway’s car came back down onto all four and rolled across the finish line.  The car had a damaged front end, Jacob’s Ladder and bird cage and would miss the last heat.  Hassell had snuck past in the melee to take the win.

Hassell also won the final heat from Mark George while Brock Dean, who is settling into speedcars quickly, was third.

Hassell has struck good form at the right time with his defence of his Queensland Championship coming up at Charlton Raceway on March 31.  Car owner John Harders was a happy man at the end of the night pleased with the performance of his driver and the new engine.

Hy- Performance Drive from Hamilton To Claim Victory at Lismore

The speedcars provided another night of enthralling racing at the Bartercard Lismore Speedway on Saturday March 3 and with each meeting at the Northern Rivers venue their popularity continues to grow.

This has also seen their ranks continue to grow with sprintcar driver Brock Dean making his debut on the night behind the wheel of the former Brisbane Haulage Stealth/Gaerte which had driven by Kevin Titman.  John Lennon was making a welcome return after some years out of the sport driving his own Stealth/Ed Pink Ford which American Davey Ray had driven to third at the recent ‘Champion of Champions’.  Another was Mick Meudell driving the Doug Cavell owned Bullet/Supercharged Mitsubishi while Grant Draney had a guest drive in Jason Gray’s ‘Naughty but Nice Breka/Fontana.

The first heat was a great birthday present for Bill Foreman with son Brett leading him home and being the first time that the Foremans had finished one/two in a race.  Unfortunately Meudell had a short night after finishing the race with a missing engine, deciding to park it before doing any damage.

1          Brett Foreman           2          Bill Foreman              3          Mick Williams

Ken Stanaway (Polar Ice Stealth/Esslinger) was looking for his third straight feature win at Lismore and started the night off well with a hard fought victory over Kelvin Hamilton.  Jeremy Hassell having his initial outing with the Graham Racing Developments Hawk engine finished third but with a smile on his face happy with the engines potential.

1          Ken Stanaway           2          Kelvin Hamilton         3          Jeremy Hassell

Michael Harders (Zanows Sand & Gravel/Fuchs Lubricants Ellis/Volvo) won the third heat with Bill Foreman again second and Brett Foreman third.

1          Michael Harders        2          Bill Foreman              3          Brett Foreman

The final heat was a torrid affair as the track had developed some ruts which made it difficult to run in the middle lane of the turns.  Mark George (Position 1) hugged the pole line and despite numerous attempts by Hassell (Brisbane Haulage Stealth/Hawk) as they bounced around the track he was able to hold on to take the win.  Andrew Barr was third with Draney, Stanaway and Hamilton all over his rear push bar.

1          Mark George             2          Jeremy Hassell          3          Andrew Barr

Lismore Speedway has introduced an interesting innovative aspect to their meetings with a roofless bus taking fans on a slow tour of the pits during interval.  For $2 patrons can see the activities in the pits in the safety of the bus and as there is no roof the pit crews are able to communicate with them.  A tour later in the night has the added attraction of watching a couple of the feature races from the middle of the infield.  This is such a great idea it’s a wonder someone hasn’t thought of it before.

The Foreman Family made up the front row of the 20 lap feature with Club Championship points leader Ken Stanaway a fair way back in the pack in position nine.  Unfortunately Hassell was a non starter when a damaged cable would not let the engine stay in gear.  Grant Draney (Position 4) made a nice run on the green to go to the lead on the first lap closely followed by Kelvin Hamilton and Mark George.  Stanaway was well back caught behind a couple of cars and losing ground to the leaders.

A yellow on the third lap closed the field up but once again Draney was able to pull away although it was obvious Hamilton was not content with second.  Stanaway was bringing the crowd to their feet with some high speed sweeps around the outside of cars and was soon up to third and on a charge.  Within a couple of laps Stanaway had pulled in the leaders and looking for an opportunity.

Lap thirteen was unlucky for Andrew Barr when he was caught wide coming into the main straight hitting the wall hard and taking a heavy tumble.  The Gold Coast fisherman was pulled from the car suffering from dizziness but by the end of the meeting was feeling better but a little sore.  Unfortunately the car sustained extensive damage.

On the restart Hamilton (Hy-Performance Racing Stealth/Mopar) made his move and went to the front while Stanaway was still determined to make it win number three.  After a couple of laps he accounted for Draney and set sail after the leader.  He tried a couple of times for a run around the outside but on each occasion Hamilton had enough speed to hold him out.  One last attempt coming into the last lap saw Stanaway glance the wall and lose enough momentum for Draney to sneak past.  Despite another run right on the line the order remained unchanged.

The action further back in the pack had also been intense with John Lennon, Michael Harders and Brett Foreman enjoying the close competition.

The speedcars next outing at Lismore will be night two of the East Coast Speedcar Stampede over the Easter week-end on Saturday 7 April.

Stanaway Dominates Danny Davidson Memorial

Lismore Speedway hosted the 2006 running of the Danny Davidson Memorial on Boxing Night a race held in memory of one of Queensland greatest speedcar drivers.  Ken Stanaway blasted from position four to challenge leader Michael Harders on the opening lap and after an exciting side by side tussle took command on lap three.

Kelvin Hamilton followed Stanaway through to the front of the pack and chased the leader for a number of laps and at one stage looked like he could make a move but then dropped back and eventually lost his spot to Mark George.  Grant Draney used the night to set up his new ‘Bullet’ and by the end of the feature was turning in some quick laps.

Stanaway enjoyed a lengthy lead as the laps wound down however with a handful of laps remaining sparks started to fly out from under the rear of the Polar Ice Stealth/Esslinger.  The rear disc brake had flown apart putting on a spectacular light show but it did not hinder the leader who won in fine style.

The field for the night saw some car swapping with Kevin Titman taking over the drive of the John Harders Racing Brisbane Haulage Stealth/Gaerte and Brett Foreman behind the wheel of the Ellis/Volvo from the same team.  This allowed Bill Foreman some seat time in his ‘old’ car, Gambler/Porsche, as his new car wasn’t quite ready.

The opening heat saw the first win for the Michael Harders driven Terry & Tess Holland owned Stealth/V6 Isuzu.  This combination is looking stronger at every outing and it is a credit to the team for looking ‘outside the square’ and making it work.

Heat two saw Stanaway off pole and although leading early was obviously struggling with the set up which allowed Mark George (Inkjet Toner Refills Breka/Porsche) and Kelvin Hamilton (Hy-Performance Fluid Connectors Stealth/Mopar) to motor past.  After such a great start to the season Andrew Barr’s luck went pear shaped with an engine not wanting to run on four cylinders.  Changes and checks proved fruitless as it seemed that the magneto was on a ‘Christmas break’.

Heat three and the ‘Naughty but Nice Breka/Fontana’ driven by Jason Gray led from start to finish while Bill Foreman and Kevin Titman diced for the minors.  Jason McDowell (fuel), Mick Williams (holed radiator) and Brett Foreman (engine miss) failed to go the distance.

The final heat saw Jeremy Hassell blast to the front from position two only for it all to go wrong in turn four.  The car bicycled and then did a wheel stand causing the car to spin around and finish against the fence.  He restarted but Stanaway was not to be denied and recorded his first win of the night setting a new one lap record of 13.901 in the process.  Hassell crossed the line in second but was relegated back in the finishing order for restarting out of position.

A couple of drivers swapped cars for the feature with Jeremy Hassell taking over the team car from Kevin Titman due to a holed oil tank on his car and Brett Foreman ‘repossessing’ his car back from his Father.  The 25 lap feature went non stop and it was obvious that the cars were quicker than the previous meeting as the teams fine tune their cars to suit the Lismore track.

The Brisbane speedcars are booked for another meeting at Lismore on 13 January which will be their final outing before the ‘Hutchinson Builders Speedcar Speed Week’ at Toowoomba.

Lismore 2nd December 2006

Barr Triumphs at Lismore

Andrew Barr celebrated obtaining a new sponsor, Fuchs Oils, by taking out the 20 lap speedcar feature race at the picturesque Lismore Speedway on Saturday 2 December.  He had led the previous main at Toowoomba a fortnight earlier until the final corner but this time made no mistake to take the win.

1993 was the last occasion that speedcars had raced at Lismore and promoter Greg Coombes was keen to see them in action at his venue.

Fifteen cars were on hand with Compact driver Kevin Titman having his first competitive drive in a speedcar behind the wheel of the John Harders owned Brisbane Haulage Ellis/Vovo.  Titman was in for a busy night racing compacts and speedcars.

The first heat saw Brett Foreman (Auzprint Gambler/Porsche) race to a good win despite being pressured from Michael Harders (Terry Holland Isuzu) and Toni Kruck (Titan Garges Mopar).  This was the second generation driver’s first win since taking up the sport a couple of years ago and was witnessed by his proud parents Bill and Lin Foreman who are hard workers behind the scenes for the speedcar association..

The second heat went to Jeremy Hassell (Brisbane Haulage Stealth/Fontana) who was untroubled from pole with Andrew Barr and Ken Stanaway filling the minor places.  There was a minor scuffle in the first corner between Barrie Valentino and Mark George which saw the former out with front end damage.  John Davidson had an early night after suffering a driveline problem.

The reverse grid heats saw Toni Kruck blast to a win in heat three from position three with Jason Gray (Naughty but Nice Breka/Fontana) home next ahead of Kevin Titman.  There was a yellow when Brett Foreman tangled with another car and spun in turn two.  A split oil line finished the Holland Isuzu for the night while Jason McDowell (Central Towing Gardner/Volvo) suffered a broken timing belt tensioner which also put him out.

The last heat saw Mark George (Inkjet Toner Refills Breka/Porsche) and Ken Stanaway (Polar Ice Stealth/Esslinger) on the front row with Stanaway racing away to score his first win in the new car.  A faulty magneto in Shaun Hannigan’s Gaerte engine, which had progressively worsened during the night, would see # 76 miss the feature.

The field for the 20 lap feature was set with Michael Harders borrowing his Father’s car and starting from the rear.  On the green Brett Foreman (Position 2) raced to the front while Toni Kruck was also using the high line to go forward.  However as Kruck lined up Mick Williams for a pass as they came out of turn four Williams car suddenly turned hard right taking both cars hard into the wall.

It was a frightening accident with Kruck’s car finishing upside down.  When the car was righted an oil fire broke out which was quickly doused by the fire crew.  Fortunately both drivers, although shaken, were okay with Kruck suffering a bruised lower leg when it hit the torque tube.  The same could not be said for the cars with both suffering extensive damage.

On the restart Barr wasted no time in going to the front and was never headed breaking the one lap record in the process.  Behind him Mark George was hounded by Jeremy Hassell for most of the race and despite a late race charge by the Queensland Champ was able to hold onto second.

Kevin Titman drove steadily all night and with more seat time could become as consistent in speedcars as he is in the compacts.

Congratulations to Andrew Barr who has started the season in fine style and now leads the points for the club championship.
