American Takes Out Round 3

ArcherfieldTouring American Davey Ray impressively defeated a stellar field of Australia’s finest midget exponents at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway on Saturday night, November 21. Inclement weather affected the size of the crowd however the main aim of the management was to ensure they saw a 30 lap main event for the third round of the Triple X Speedcar Super Series.

Dedicated to the life of Australian speedway icon George Tatnell, the ‘GT’ Tribute event coincided perfectly with his son Brooke’s victory in the opening round of World Series Sprintcars @ BIS Archerfield. Each midget competing carried a limited edition decal in memory of the charismatic 'GT'.

SSS managing director Ken Jenkins cancelled time trials and the pole shuffle in order to run the A-main before the closing weather could further hamper proceedings. What the fans saw was some spectacular midget action with some of the best drivers in the midget ranks doing battle.

At the initial start it was reigning WA and Queensland midget champion Dene McAllan who shot to the lead around Ray only to have the race halted not once but twice. The second occasion was for a flipping Ant Brien while Darren Jenkins was also involved in turn four. On this particular start Ray produced a classy move to steal the lead away from McAllan as the pair raced through turn 2 only for the red light stoppage to negate the stunning move.

The third attempt saw McAllan masterfully work his way into the lead where he would stay until a mid race restart where he lost ground allowing Ray to shoot to the lead. The Davenport, Iowa native was simply awesome to watch as he powered the Rondalee sponsored #11 through the back markers.

Behind Ray the duels were breathtaking. Firstly McAllan and West Australian ace Keith Giles were trading the runner up position while further behind Scott Glazebrook, Troy Jenkins and Nathan Smee were at each other.

Many eyes were also on seventeenth starting three times series champion Mark Brown. Charging into the top 10, Brown was on his way to a top five finish when he pulled out of the event with nine laps remaining.

It was also with nine laps remaining when the stirring drive of Giles ended abruptly as he tangled with a lapped car on the main straight, flipping the Wayne Cover owned #76 out of contention.

West Australian Glazebrook then found himself in the runner up spot before unfortunate contact between he and another competitor damaged his steering and ultimately his chance at a podium finish.

Round 1 winner Smee edged past round 2 victor Jenkins in the dying laps to snatch second however the pair of them had no answer to the smooth talking American.

“I have to thank Brad (Dent – car owner) for the chance to race with these guys,” said a jubilant Ray from the winners circle.

“I will be back here for the Australian title in February, I don’t know what I will be driving yet but I am planning on being here that’s for sure,” said Ray.

Finishing in fourth behind Ray, Smee and Jenkins was Queensland’s Grant Draney while impressive rookie Brock Hallett raced to fifth. John McKay finished sixth ahead of McAllan who suffered a deflating tire. Before he did so, the ultra talented McAllan recorded the quickest lap of the final with a stunning 13.7-second circulation.

David Crabtree was eighth ahead of Sid Whittaker Q58 and a luckless Scott Glazebrook in tenth. Non finishers included Giles, Darren Power, Brown, Robbie Gordon, Brad Sloan Q 55who was an earlier heat winner and Q5 Adam Wallis who also rolled out of contention. Ben Dillon, Mick Harders Q14, Jenkins and Brien were the other non-finishers.
Had it not been for the late inclusion of the V8 Dirt Modifieds to the program plus the Super Sedans, the night may well have been completely lost to the rain. They were able to wheel pack and hot lap the surface back into shape before the midgets could even take to the water logged circuit.

Round 4 of the super series hits Maryborough January 1st and 2nd 2010 our next club show is @ BIS Archerfield on the 5th of December see ya there !!

Sydney's Troy Jenkins won his second career Super Series round at Murray Bridge as he claimed round 2 of the Triple X Race Co Speedcar Super Series at the Murray Bridge Speedway.

After starting from the second row of the 30 lap A-main Jenkins forged his way to the front on lap five with a stunning outside move on early race leader Mark Brown and from that point he was never headed although Brown did throw out one final challenge for the lead on the final turn but it was all too late.

"We really needed this one after giving away such a start after the opening round. After the first round I gave the guys some work to do, we rebuilt the car so I really owed my guys this one" commented an elated winner on the podium.

Talking the Dirt with Brad Sloan (55Q)

Brad SloanKicking off his racing career in karting Brad has progressed in the smooth, clean and fast operator of the 55Q Breka/Mopar seen today.

1986 saw Brad tackle his first race season in karting then notching up a 2nd place in the QLD Title race 1996 and then with his first Australia #1 coming in 1997 for his weight division.

Switching to one of the most popular divisions on dirt being the compact ranks

Purchasing what was then known as a Clark Performance chassis from kiwi Tim Clark running a Suzuki engine Brad set about turning some laps on the ovals around the country.

Having some great success contesting the Australian tiles finishing 2nd in 2002 @ BIS, 4th spot in 2005 up in Bundaberg, on the podium for 2006 with a 3rd in Wangaratta and 4th place 2007 in Maryborough Brad also ran 2nd overall in the 2006 Compact Speedcar Super Series not to mention 3rd in both QLD Titles contested in 04 and 05!!

Having run the Neville Brennan midget and winning Rookie of the year 2003 Brad liked running a midget so when the opportunity arose to step back into the midget section with the purchase of an immaculate ex Brett Morris Stealth/Mopar the team grabbed it by the horns and blasted onto the midget scene.

This year saw the team return to a Tim Clark chassis in the way of a brand new Breka from NZ however Retaining the trusty Mopar Powerplant

Brad SloanWith the speeds and closeness of competitors now Brad consistently finds himself in the top 5 at most if not all shows.

Residing in Tingalpa being a Mechanical Designer by trade Brad loves his racing and looks forward to the future of midget racing in Australia.

Brad would also like to say huge thanks for the support from parents Jamie and Narelle Sloan for all the backing over the years of racing and the years to come.

“Also without the help of Tim Clark @ BSL, KRE race engines, Wright Marine and BHR fabrications we would struggle to have some fun” Mentioned Brad.

Polar Ice Queensland Championship to Dene McAllen

Dene McAllan added the 2009-10 Queensland Championship to his West Australian crown when he took out the 30 lap event at Maryborough Speedway on Saturday 31 October. It was a sweet victory for car owner Jack Berry who also sponsored the event.

After some practice laps the previous day the team decided to use their second car the Esslinger powered Stealth in their attempt to wrestle the title from Queenland’s best and fellow WA driver Scott Glazebrook in the Brendan Fox Esslinger. Brock Dean was top qualifier and then backed it up with a Pole Shuffle win to gain the prime pole position for the ‘A’ main. He then went to the front on the green from McAllan, Sid Whittaker, Anthony Chaffey and John Davidson.

A series of yellows punctuated the early laps which included a collision on the back straight after a car got out of shape. This left Grant Draney stranded and Matt Greenwood with nowhere to go. Both cars were consequently parked on the infield. Another yellow saw McAllan into the back of Dean and stalled on the track. McAllan taking his place in the line up behind leader Brock Dean (Sunshine Roofing Aggressor/Hawk) for the restart.

After a few more laps another spun car saw John Davidson (Super Butcher Spike/Gaerte), who had advanced to third, spin to miss it. He restarted back in his position. The 1994 and 1997 Queensland Champion was showing good form and keen to win another title.

When the green lights came on again Dean pulled away from the pack as Scott Glazebrook (Position 11) and defending champion Mark George (Breka/Porsche – position 16) continued to move forward. A couple of new drivers were performing well and in the top ten including Whittaker (Stealth/Mopar), Chris Singleton (Breka/Steve Smith Hawk) and Anthony Chaffey (Stealth/Ed Pink Ford) who was well up with the leaders in fourth.

With laps ticking away lapped cars came into play and McAllan closed in on Dean. With nine laps to travel he made his move to the front and quickly put distance between himself and the rest. John Davidson’s good run came to an end with five to go when the engine stopped which moved Chaffey to third. Glazebrook was now fourth while George had climbed to six. Brad Sloan (Breka/Mopar) was between the two and putting in a good drive after changing to the New Zealand built chassis this season.
Dene McAllan had no trouble maintaining his lead to the end with Brock Dean again second. He was second to Mark George at the last championship held earlier this year. Surprise packet Anthony Chaffey, in only his third speedcar meeting after serving his apprenticeship in sedans and dwarf cars, gaining the last spot on the podium.

Jack Berry presented the trophies and then later in the pits presented all drivers with a commemorative medallion.

The heats were shared around with only Brock Dean winning both of his heats. They went without incident except for Brock Hallett (Spike/BraytonFord) in heat three who had the misfortune to hit the wall at the start finish line damaging the rear brake and a bird cage pulling infield without bringing on the yellows. The damage bringing his night to an early end.

The eight car Pole Shuffle had to be ‘reshuffled’ when Sean Burrows withdrew with engine woes. This added Doug Cavell to the line up but his run was short when he was eliminated by Michael Harders (Stealth/Hawk) in the first round. Chris Singleton accounted for Harders and then fell to John Davidson. Anthony Chaffey didn’t get to run when a fuel pump drive broke when the engine fired. Sid Whittaker got the better of Davidson but then lost out to McAllan. This left Brock Dean and Dene McAllan to ‘fight’ out the final. Dean was too good and held off the fast finishing West Australian.

It was another night of champagne midget racing and with more drivers to join in the fun in the near future the QSRA is going from strength to strength.

Wrap Up
The Stealth/Esslinger that Dene McAllan drove to win this event has now won two Queensland Championships with Ken Stanaway driving it to win the 2008 title. Brett Foreman drove his Father’s car at Maryborough after damaging his in a big roll over at the last BIS meeting.

Doug Cavell has raced at Maryborough on both two wheels and four. He raced speedway motorcycles some years ago around South East Queensland. He has also competed in motocross, sport sedans and sprintcars. Doug loves his motorsport.

If Neale Tobin had been competing on the night it would have made it two former solo riders. Unfortunately an engine coming from the States didn’t make it on time. He had the misfortune to have his Gaerte engine ‘put a leg out of bed’ at the first meeting of the season.

Chris Singleton won his maiden speedcar race at Maryborough. The Compact racer is coming to grips with the more powerful car and this season will compete in both divisions. He is a former Queensland Compact Champion.

Modified Production racer Troy Ware debuted in speedcars at Maryborough in the former Doug Cavell Razor/Buick. He struggled with a car that wanted to swap ends.
