Polar Ice Queensland Championship to Dene McAllen Dene McAllan added the 2009-10 Queensland Championship to his West Australian crown when he took out the 30 lap event at Maryborough Speedway on Saturday 31 October. It was a sweet victory for car owner Jack Berry who also sponsored the event. After some practice laps the previous day the team decided to use their second car the Esslinger powered Stealth in their attempt to wrestle the title from Queenland’s best and fellow WA driver Scott Glazebrook in the Brendan Fox Esslinger. Brock Dean was top qualifier and then backed it up with a Pole Shuffle win to gain the prime pole position for the ‘A’ main. He then went to the front on the green from McAllan, Sid Whittaker, Anthony Chaffey and John Davidson. A series of yellows punctuated the early laps which included a collision on the back straight after a car got out of shape. This left Grant Draney stranded and Matt Greenwood with nowhere to go. Both cars were consequently parked on the infield. Another yellow saw McAllan into the back of Dean and stalled on the track. McAllan taking his place in the line up behind leader Brock Dean (Sunshine Roofing Aggressor/Hawk) for the restart. After a few more laps another spun car saw John Davidson (Super Butcher Spike/Gaerte), who had advanced to third, spin to miss it. He restarted back in his position. The 1994 and 1997 Queensland Champion was showing good form and keen to win another title. When the green lights came on again Dean pulled away from the pack as Scott Glazebrook (Position 11) and defending champion Mark George (Breka/Porsche – position 16) continued to move forward. A couple of new drivers were performing well and in the top ten including Whittaker (Stealth/Mopar), Chris Singleton (Breka/Steve Smith Hawk) and Anthony Chaffey (Stealth/Ed Pink Ford) who was well up with the leaders in fourth. With laps ticking away lapped cars came into play and McAllan closed in on Dean. With nine laps to travel he made his move to the front and quickly put distance between himself and the rest. John Davidson’s good run came to an end with five to go when the engine stopped which moved Chaffey to third. Glazebrook was now fourth while George had climbed to six. Brad Sloan (Breka/Mopar) was between the two and putting in a good drive after changing to the New Zealand built chassis this season. Dene McAllan had no trouble maintaining his lead to the end with Brock Dean again second. He was second to Mark George at the last championship held earlier this year. Surprise packet Anthony Chaffey, in only his third speedcar meeting after serving his apprenticeship in sedans and dwarf cars, gaining the last spot on the podium. Jack Berry presented the trophies and then later in the pits presented all drivers with a commemorative medallion. The heats were shared around with only Brock Dean winning both of his heats. They went without incident except for Brock Hallett (Spike/BraytonFord) in heat three who had the misfortune to hit the wall at the start finish line damaging the rear brake and a bird cage pulling infield without bringing on the yellows. The damage bringing his night to an early end. The eight car Pole Shuffle had to be ‘reshuffled’ when Sean Burrows withdrew with engine woes. This added Doug Cavell to the line up but his run was short when he was eliminated by Michael Harders (Stealth/Hawk) in the first round. Chris Singleton accounted for Harders and then fell to John Davidson. Anthony Chaffey didn’t get to run when a fuel pump drive broke when the engine fired. Sid Whittaker got the better of Davidson but then lost out to McAllan. This left Brock Dean and Dene McAllan to ‘fight’ out the final. Dean was too good and held off the fast finishing West Australian. It was another night of champagne midget racing and with more drivers to join in the fun in the near future the QSRA is going from strength to strength. Provisional Results Heat 1 - 1 Chris Singleton 2 Dene McAllan (WA) 3 Brad Sloan Heat 2 - 1 Sid Whittaker 2 Sean Burrows 3 Anthony Chaffey Heat 3 - 1 Brock Dean 2 Doug Cavell 3 John Davidson Heat 4 - 1 Dene McAllan (WA) 2 Sean Burrows 3 Grant Draney Heat 5 - 1 Brock Dean 2 Anthony Chaffey 3 Scott Glazebrook (WA) Heat 6 - 1 Michael Harders 2 John Davidson 3 Brad Sloan Pole Shuffle Michael Harders def Doug Cavell Chris Singleton def Michael Harders John Davidson def Chris Singleton John Davidson def Anthony Chaffey (Did not contest) Sid Whittaker def John Davidson Dene McAllan def Sid Whittaker Brock Dean def Dene McAllan ‘A’ Main 1 Dene McAllan (WA) 2 Brock Dean 3 Brad Sloan 4 Anthony Chaffey 5 Scott Glazebrook (WA) 6 Mark George 7 Chris Singleton 8 Doug Cavell 9 Sid Whittaker 10 Michael Harders 11 Barrie Valentino Wrap Up The Stealth/Esslinger that Dene McAllan drove to win this event has now won two Queensland Championships with Ken Stanaway driving it to win the 2008 title. Brett Foreman drove his Father’s car at Maryborough after damaging his in a big roll over at the last BIS meeting. Doug Cavell has raced at Maryborough on both two wheels and four. He raced speedway motorcycles some years ago around South East Queensland. He has also competed in motocross, sport sedans and sprintcars. Doug loves his motorsport. If Neale Tobin had been competing on the night it would have made it two former solo riders. Unfortunately an engine coming from the States didn’t make it on time. He had the misfortune to have his Gaerte engine ‘put a leg out of bed’ at the first meeting of the season. Chris Singleton won his maiden speedcar race at Maryborough. The Compact racer is coming to grips with the more powerful car and this season will compete in both divisions. He is a former Queensland Compact Champion. Modified Production racer Troy Ware debuted in speedcars at Maryborough in the former Doug Cavell Razor/Buick. He struggled with a car that wanted to swap ends. |

Nathan Smee Surpreme in SSS Opener Sydney's Nathan Smee in the American Racing and Tire Services 7N Spike/Esslinger started his campaign in the 2009-2010 XXX Speedcar Super Series in fine style with a resounding win over Mark Brown running the 69N KC Tools Hawk/Aggressor, winner of the last three super series, and WA's Scott Glazebrook in the 9N TFR Spike/Esslinger at BIS on Saturday 24 October. Smee running the American Tire & Racing Services Spike/Esslinger had earned pole position with top points after the preliminaries. He and Brown paced the field on the green of the 30 lap main as WA's Keith Giles in the Coverall Sheetmetals Spike/Esslinger , Scott Glazebrook steering the TFR Spike from NSW, Grant Draney in the 7Q SP Tools Steve Smith Hawk/Spike, Brock Dean running the 99Q DTR Mechanical Aggressor/Hawk and Dene McAllan in the Polar Ice Spike/Hawk 29Q gave chase. Sean Burrows driving the Stan Burrow Automotive Stealth/Brayton out of position 5 had a big moment' in turn three as his car caught a rut and got airborne. Luckily it came down on all four and despite nearly stopping he was able to continue albeit many places back in the field. The first yellow came on in lap six when Grant Draney looped the SP Tools Spike/Hawk exiting turn four. it was obvious on the restart that Mark Browns KC Tools Hawk/Aggressor was struggling getting the car off the mark and Smee quickly built a big gap. However the yellows were quickly on again when a scrimmage in turn two saw Chris Singleton 96Q B & B Deliveries Stealth/Mopar on his side. Once again Browns 69N Rinkin Motorsport Hawk was slow away on the restart and Keith Giles 76 WA was looking for an opportunity to move to second. After another couple of yellows Giles Coverall Sheetmetal Spike/Esslinger found an opening thundered passed and relegated Brown to third followed by Glazebrook 9NSW, Dean 99Q and McAllan 29Q. A couple of laps into the restart McAllan challenged Dean going into turn three and after a clash of wheels Dean spun around and was quickly joined in the melee by Johnny Davidsons Super Butcher Spike/ Gaerte 24Q and Anthony Chaffey in the Autozone Toowoomba's Stealth/ED Pink as Grant Draney spun the Tools 4U GWD Enterprises Spike to miss. Johnny Davidson was the unlucky victim having run a fantastic race however now with the R/H Knerf bar jammed into the R/H American Racing Tire the Wild Purple Web Media Spike was unable to restart while McAllan 29Q pulled infield during the rolling laps with a problem. On the restart Keith Giles was in trouble in the Cotterill Sheet Metals Spike/Esslinger. His good run coming to an end with a blown inside rear tyre. There had also been a shuffle of places further back with Michael Harders Stealth/Hawk 14Q now fourth ahead of Sid Whittakers Speedline Engineering 58Q Stealth/Mopar, Mark George in the 16Q T & P Electrics Breka/Porsche also the Sean Burrows Stealth/Gaerte Crankshaft Engineering 8Q and Anthony Chaffeys Envirodrilling Stealth/Ed Pink 25Q all jostling placings as Grant Draney in the 7Q GWD Enterprises SP Tools Spike/Hawk again moved forward from the back of the field. Mark Brown closed in on NathanSmee towards the end but Smee was too good taking the initial round of the 09/10 SSS. Sid Whittaker Northcoast Profilers 58Q Stealth/Mopar also finished on the charge being the first Queenslander home in fourth. It was fortunate that the meeting was even completed after a storm hit the complex at the completion of the first round of heats. Once the rain stopped the John Kelly driven grader did its job and then wheel packing by the V8 Dirt Modifieds ensured that all sections enjoyed a good track for the remainder of their events. Unfortunately due to lost time the B main and Dash Chase had to be dropped. Quick Time' went to Mark Browns 69N KC Tools Hawk/Aggressor with a 14.032 ahead of Nathan Smee in the American Racing and Tire Services Esslinger/Spike 7N 14.108, Scott Glazebrook TFR 9N Esslinger/Spike bagging a 14.130 , Troy Jenkins BOC Gasses Stealth/Fontana in the “14.1's also with a 14.183, Anthony Brien Spike/Fontana clocking a 14.270 and Grant Draney in the SP Tools Spike/Steve Smith Hawk 14.291. Grant Draneys Hawk in position 6 was the meat in the sandwich of a pair of Esslingers when he finished second in heat one behind Keith Giles out of position 5 and ahead of Scott Glazebrook 9N in theBrendan Fox Spike/Esslinger from position7. Heat two had some drama when a clash coming out of turn two resulted in the Anthony Brien 6N Dominator Engines Spike/Fontana finishing on his side. Both he and Anthony Chaffey were unable to restart. Nathan Smee in the Race Safety Equipment 7N Esslinger/Spike from position 7 scored the win ahead of Brock Dean 99Q Gleeman Truck Parts Aggressor/Hawk from position 3 and Dene McAllans Polar Ice Spike/Hawk – position 5. Heat three also saw a scuffle in turn two with Johnny Davidson in the Super Butcher Spike/Gaerte 24Q being “Steak” sandwiched and at one stage up on two wheels and out with a popped L/F tyre. Sean Burrows in the Stan Burrow Automotive Stealth/Gaerte 8Q starting from position 6 was the big mover on the restart and charged to the front hotly pursued by Troy Jenkins BOC Gases Stealth/Fontana racing from position 7 and Mark Browns KC Tools 69N Aggressor/Hawk. Sean Burrows used the high line while Troy Jenkins hugged the pole. Each corner Jenkins would close in and then Burrows would pull away in the straights. It was great racing and patience paid off for Troy Jenkins in the BOC Gases Stealth/Fontana 78N when a slight error from Burrows left enough of an opening for him to get to the front. When racing resumed after the rain we saw Keith Giles 76WA score another win from Brock Dean and Nathan Smee. Dene McAllans 29Q Polar Ice entry suffered a flat inside rear tyre about half way through and struggled to the end on the rim. The fifth heat was full of drama which started in the first corner. Flight Captian Brett Foreman in the Auto Graphics Signs and Stripes Stealth/Porsche 13Q Departing from position 4 rode a wheel and cart wheeled onto the top of the fence finishing upside down high in the air with the front wheel caught around a pole. The third generation driver was unhurt but the car suffered significant damage. On the restart Brad Sloan in the brand new KRE Race Engines 55Q Breka/Mopar led the way followed by Anthony Chaffeys N&G Motor Repairs Stealth/ED Pink 25Q, Johnny Davidsons Purolator Filters Spike/Gaerte 24Q and Troy Jenkins BOC Gases Stealth/Fontana 78N who were all looking to go forward. It all came unstuck for the former AGP winner Troy Jenkins when he hit the fence on the start/finish line and took a heavy dump. He was out of the car before the rescue crew reached him. It was a rare mistake from Jenkins who is regarded as one of the smoothest speedcar drivers in the country. Former sedan and dwarf car racer Anthony Chaffeyin the Auto Zone 25Q winning his maiden speedcar race after a successful move on Brad Sloans Wright Marine 55Q Breka/Mopar with Johnny Davidson in the SuperButcher Spike/Gaerte 24Q taking the final place. Michael Harders 14Q Ferris 60 Hawk/Stealth was on the boil in the final heat along with Adam Wallis 5Q in the Brisbane Haulage Enforcer/Hawk to finish second ahead of Mark Brown. It was an enthralling start to the XXX – Speedcar Super Series' and there is no doubt that it is game on'. The following rounds should not be missed. Provisional Results Heat 1 1 Keith Giles (WA) 2 Grant Draney (Qld) 3 Scott Glazebrook (WA) Heat 2 1 Nathan Smee (NSW) 2 Brock Dean (Qld) 3 Dene McAllan (WA) Heat 3 1 Troy Jenkins (NSW) 2 Sean Burrows (Qld) 3 Mark Brown (NSW) Heat 4 1 Keith Giles (WA) 2 Brock Dean (Qld) 3 Nathan Smee (NSW) Heat 5 1 Anthony Chaffey (Qld) 2 Brad Sloan (Qld) 3 John Davidson (Qld) Heat 6 1 Michael Harders (Qld) 2 Adam Wallis (Qld) 3 Mark Brown (NSW) A Main 1 Nathan Smee (NSW) 2 Mark Brown (NSW) 3 Scott Glazebrook (WA) 4 Sid Whittaker (Qld) 5 Michael Harders (Qld) 6 Mark George (Qld) 7 Grant Draney (Qld) 8 Sean Burrows (Qld) 9 Anthony Chaffey (Qld) 10 Ben Dillon (SA) 11 Brock Dean (Qld) Notable Mentions include, Australian F500 champion Brock Hallett made his speedcar debut and showed he wasn't daunted by the bigger more powerful car. Once he gets more laps under his belt he will be a front runner in the Blazemaster Fire Protection 91Q Spike/Brayton. It was a bad night for John McKay 5SA Stealth/Mopar and local Brendan Palmer in the Super Geek Computer Repairs 41Q Breka/ED Pink with neither turning a racing lap. John McKay's Mopar had a fuel problem they couldn't cure while Brendan Palmer's Ed Pink Ford dropped onto three cylinders during hot laps. It was a big disappointment for Brendan who has just finished a new car after a heavy dump at the Qld Title earlier this year. Also to drop out and loose a cylinder was the very fast Darren Vines Stealth/Nissan 19Q After showing some blistering pace early in his races the car was retired for the night and the team to once again regroup and look to go again. It was great to see Sean Burrows competitive after a run of mechanical problems last season. Car owner and former driver Stan Burrow is pleased the way the car is going and hopeful their luck has turned around. They are planning to contest the Australian Title at Avalon in February 2010 in the Stan Burrows Stealth/Brayton 8Q. Next Saturday night 31st of October “Halloween” will see the running of the Polar Ice Queensland Speedcar Championship at Maryborough. This is the favourite track of many drivers and is conducive to great Midget car action. Current champ Mark George 16Q Ink Jet Toner Refills T & P Electrics Porsche/Breka will be defending his title against a strong field of 24 contenders . Nominations were higher however with a few dramas over the past weeks with engines and damages we have locked in 24 Hotshoes to run .Ryno and the team up in Maryborough always put on a great track for the Midgets so this one will be a Beauty !!! See ya there !! |
